1. Accommodation – Hostels

No real surprise here, hostels are the go to if you are on a budget, and LA does have its share to choose from. Advantage of staying in a LA hostel has to be the location, right on the door step of both Hollywood and Sunset Boulevard. With both of these streets in walking distances, you will save tons on travel cost and find lots of entertainment for the free or cheap, plus you get free breakfast, lots of pancakes for you pancake lovers.

2. Things to do in LA on a budget

On every street corner, there is a booth and with every step you will encounter  a sales rep and who can miss those tourist jeeps carting person sightseeing all day. Guess what, you can see all that for a fraction of the cost. How?

  • There are tour guides who take you on walking tours, for $10 you can experience the Hollywood Movie Star tour, that tour would normally cost $50. The tour guide will collect you from your accommodation, and take the bus with you to Hollywood. You will even get the chance to walk down Rodeo Drive and the surrounding areas at your own pace.

  • Free show tapings, its LA after all and there are always shows looking for audience members. You may be able to snag tickets to be in the studio audience of one of your favourite shows. The only drawback may be the location of the studio as not all of them are located close by. Also, be prepared to spend a whole day, between the journey to get there and the time waiting around to get in the studio and the hours of taping, it can be a full day. The popular ones go fast, so you may need to book way in advance for favourite show and hopefully it would be one that feeds you well.

  • Hike to the Hollywood sign, and again you don’t need a tour to do this. There is actually a bus which takes you about 10 minutes away from the main trail for $0.25c. The last stop is actually in a little village with some friendly persons and the houses have such character. If you want to actually get close to the sign it will take you some physical activity but the views are all worth it.

There are many options for reasonably priced food regardless off your budget. All the known fast food joints are there, as well as the small cafes with great pizza and late night grub. If you are on a healthy diet, there are farmers markets around every corner and don’t miss an opportunity to head to Johnny Rockets. It’s still a tradition.
